The goal of this treatise is to establish the relationship between energy and value.
At first, there was a spark,

Story of the Universe
It’s inspired by a very old idea, which has now been proven by science, at least in part, that the Universe is one river, and that galaxies, stars, planets and people are all whirls and eddies in the universal flow, that arise in the universe as naturally as whirls and eddies arise in a fast flowing river.
It arose once upon a time in a place which created time and space. It spread in darkness like an exploding black hole until there was light. It was pure energy in pure symmetry, almost.
The imperfections weighed down upon space, gathering energy and mass into vortices, which turned into galaxies, which created stars, which created planets, which created us.
I started this book as an atheist, but half way through, I discovered that the universe is my God, or that God is the face of the Universe, which is the same thing because we understand the unfamiliar through the familiar, and God is the personification of the Universe.
I also realized that religion is a part of human nature, and that without religion, there is a hole in human nature that needs to be filled with one strong belief or another. But the belief does not need to be wrong and religion does not need to be in conflict with science.
My book is an attempt to unite religion and science by a very simple idea- We can disagree about whether or not the Universe had a Creator, but we can all agree that the Universe is our Creator.
It is also an attempt to bridge the gulf between art and science, by showing that science is a rich vein of poetry for artists to mine. It’s not easy to do. It took me twenty years. It will take more talented poets less.
It’s not easy to transform the complex and precise language of science into the simple and vivid language of art. Days of inspiration were followed by months of nothing.
Fortunately the book itself was an escape from my real life. Still the highs of inspiration were worth it for me, and I hope they will be for you.

The Fire Sea of Wonder
Life is not a problem to be solved forever. It is a child which should be ever-nourished, ever-shaped and ever-protected in body, mind and spirit. Its body should be well-fed and exposed to hardship, so that it grows healthy, strong and beautiful.
Its mind should be exposed to all ideas and experiences, from which to take its form and nourishment. And its spirit should be exposed to danger, from which to nourish its strength.
A life without risk is a poor life in a small room without windows. A life where desire is suppressed is a life of breathless, droning pain from a thousand unhealed wounds.
A life of risk and desire is a life of the hunter and the hunted in the jungle. It is a hard life, filled with pain, danger, confusion, fear, temptation, humiliation and intense joy.
It is a life filled with all that is evil and all that is good. It is the only life in which perfection can be sought. It is the only true life.
Those who see life as a problem, offer an alternative as a solution. They offer a state without desire, without change, without pain and without life.
They promise happiness, but without life there is no happiness. I offer life.

Emergence of Value
For each being, an increase in being is an increase in value;
A decrease in being is a decrease in value;
Preservation, growth and perpetuation of being lead to maximum increase in value;
Destruction is the maximum decrease in value.
The basic form of being is energy.
Mass consists of energy.
Beings are energy forms.
Space and time are dimensions of being, and cannot exist without it.
Space is a measure of distance between and within beings.
Time is a measure of movement between and within beings.
A standard measure of distance is used as a measure of space.
A standard measure of movement Is used as a measure of time.
There is no space outside of being.
There is no time outside of being.
Energy forms gain energy from one another, thereby gaining value at each other’s expense.
If the Universe is a closed energy system, it’s total energy does not change.
Therefore its total value does not change.
Energy exchanges are value exchanges.
Energy forms can be simple or complex.
Complex energy forms ultimately consist of simple energy forms.
Simpler energy forms may gain energy from one another
Within complex energy forms,
Thereby gaining value at each other’s expense.
Complex energy forms are rarely closed energy systems.
Total energy may be gained or lost by value exchanges of the simpler energy forms
Within the complex forms, thereby either increasing or decreasing
The total value of the complex form.
In life, the complex forms may be either living beings or communities of living beings.
The study of the energy exchanges within and between living beings
Is the study of the value of life.

About Yan
I was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1966, when it was still the capital of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. I left that socialist dictatorship with my family as a refugee, when I was 12. We travelled through Austria, Italy and obtained political asylum in Canada. The difference in freedom was so palpable then that I could breathe it. It’s not anymore, as the socialist ideology that created and destroyed the Soviet Union has slowly and inexplicably taken root in the West.
After graduation from high school, I travelled through Holland, Belgium, France, Israel and Egypt, where I bought a medallion of Maat, the Goddess of Truth, that I still wear.
